Term Two in Sita Rama

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

Hare Krishna!

Kia ora!

Welcome to Sita Rama!

Term two has arrived with great gusto just like the gorgeous weather that has continued to bless Auckland .  Crisp morning signals a change in the seasons and new energy in the class, which is very conducive to some exciting learning both in and out of the classroom.  We look forward to a visit to Puhoi in Week 4 to explore the Bohemian settlement and learn about the immigrants that call that part of New Zealand home (more information about this will go home next week). We also look forward to starting swimming next week. So all in all another busy term, with lots of meaningful learning.

Some academic details…

Integrated Inquiry

This term our integrated inquiry is entitled ‘Are We There Yet?’ a social sciences unit which encourages students to explore migration patterns globally and in New Zealand. They will also be exploring their own family history to discover how and why they are in New Zealand.

Our inquiry begins with a focus on ANZAC day and World Wars One and Two.  These three events in history have contributed to some significant migration patterns across the world and have influenced NZ society significantly.

English

This term we will concentrate on written language. Our context for this will be diary writing and newspaper reports. We will also explore non fiction genre within our guided reading focuses, this links in with our inquiry, ‘Are We There Yet?’

As we do a lot of work relating to discovering new words and their meanings it is essential that every child has a dictionary. Could you please ensure that your child has a named dictionary, that can be brought to school. The Oxford dictionaries are the best. Please can we have them in class by the end of next week.

Just as a reminder, your child will have brought reading books home at night. This will also is accompanied by a reading record which needs to be signed by you at least 3 times a week. It is fundamental in your child’s literacy development that reading aloud is encouraged and nurtured regularly. 20 minutes every night will reap great rewards, in regard to their language acquisition.

Mathematics

We will continue to develop both the knowledge and strategy strands within numeracy alongside a focus on statistical interpretation which will be integrated in our inquiry.  Our operational domain for numeracy is multiplication and division. It is essential that all students have all the timestables up to 12 and the reverse division equations at their finger tips, so support with this at home would be greatly appreciated.

Sanskrit/Sastra

Prana prabhu will continue to teach Sanskrit. We will be learning names for food groups. We will also be learning a selection of Sanskrit slokas and prayers.

Homework

Homework this term will be handed out on Friday and will need to be completed and returned on Thursday. Generally the structure of the homework will consist of a spelling activity relating to the spelling pattern focus for the week or vocabulary development, a list of words to be learnt, and an activity relating to our integrated unit The expectation is also that all students are reading for at least 20 mins every night. From time to time there will also be maths generally relating strand but also relating to strategies.

Help!

If you are a parent with a few hours to spare to help with teacher aid duties like laminating and creating resources we would love to have your help in Sita Rama.  Please write me a note with the times when you may be available to volunteer your services.

This is shaping up to be a very exciting and rich term of learning. Please come and see me if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s progress/experience at school.

Take care,

Hare
Krishna Parents/Caregivers,

Overview
of Term Two

Integrated Studies –

Our integrated topic next term is Are We There Yet? This
focuses on ANZAC and migration. This unit is designed to incorporate the
learning areas of art, social studies, mathematics and languages.  It is a unit that allows the students to
learn about the history of ANZAC day and the topic of migration. You can assist
us in this unit by;

  • Taking your child to an ANZAC day service on the
    25th of April (see notice).
  • Taking your child to the local library and reading
    books on ANZAC day.
  • Practicing new vocabulary with your child;
learning the weekly spelling words and using those words with your child.
  • Helping
your child with any and all homework requirements.

  • News- help your children when they are on news by
reading an article with them and encouraging them to turn the article into language
    they use and understand.
  • No Sharing- for health and safety reasons
please remind your child not to share food and please do not send them to
school with a supply of sweets/biscuits that they will be tempted to
share.  Sharing of food is against school
rules and excess amounts of junk food will be confiscated and returned to the
student at the end of the day.

A Call For
Help!

If you are a parent with experience working with
children or any form of organization/office/filing experience we would love to
have your help in Bal Gopal.  Please
write me a note with when you may be available to volunteer your services and
what sort of tasks you feel comfortable performing.

Mathematics

This term is all about statistics.  We will be getting familiar with using terms
related to graphs and graphing.  We will
be focused on interpreting statistical data.

Physical Education

We are very lucky to be
attending professional swimming lessons at a private swim school (no public
swimmers allowed); Hilton Brown Swim School is on Volkner Pl in Albany.

Homework

Homework is handed out to
students to be glued in their homework books every Monday.  The homework is due on the following Monday,
the date will be on the homework sheet.
Homework is provided to my students as a means of encouraging students
to practice basic skills at home.  Please
do not feel that all homework provided must be completed or feel that it must
be graded.  If I feel I have concerns
with homework, I will send a friendly reminder outlining my concerns.  Remember to work within your child’s
abilities.

Projects that are sent home linked to topic work are
compulsory
and are designed for you to spend time with your children and
encouraging their creativity.

Spelling words that need
to be learned will be given out every Monday, written in their spelling
notebooks.  The students should practice
spelling these words out loud at home and will be tested every Friday.

Mathematics basic facts
will also be in this notebook and this is tested on Friday also.

If you wish to contact me
in regards to your child please contact the school reception or write a note in
the homework books.  I apologise for not
making my email available but I do not find time to check emails during the work
day and do not feel that I will be prompt in replying, Absences and holidays
must be reported to the school office as soon as possible.

News

Every day three students
are selected to do news.

This involves the students
writing a current event news story, in their own words and presenting it to the
class.

This is a very important
part of the Bal Gopal day and I encourage you to assist your child.  You can do this by;

  • Providing
them with a newspaper (Herald, Western Leader, Central Leader)
  • Talking
to them about a current event that you can show them on the news or listen to
on the radio or view on the internet.
  • Help them
to write the story in their own language, It is important that they can be
confident reading their news to the class without assistance.
  • Help them
to think of a question, based on the information in their story, that they can
    ask the class.

Study Ladder

I am trialing a new
educational website that students can use between 9am and 3pm. Please see the
attached notice.  This will be great for
revision in the holidays.

Thank you for your help

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

As part of the healthly eating topic, Esha’s class created some menu plans for a week.

Here they are:

Gayatri made her menu plan in to a shopping bag.

Here is a video that shows what she created.
