Dear Parents/Caregivers

Hare Krishna! Welcome back to all the students to term 3 and a warm welcome to Riyah Goundar and Sachi Prasad. We are looking forward to a great term and I must say we have already made a promising start!

The values themes underlying the curriculum for this term are Cleanliness, Respect and Simplicity. These themes will be integrated across the curriculum, especially in Sastra (religious studies). This term we will also be celebrating some major festivals such as Balaram’s Appearance day (24th August 2010), Krishna Janmastami (2nd September 2010), Prabhupada’s Appearance Day ( 3rd September 2010, and Radhastami (15th September 2010).

In Sanskrit children will be learning to name different colours and simple commands in Sanskrit.  We will also be learning Sanskrit slokas and prayers and continuing with the reading and writing of beginning devanagari alphabets.  As part of our Thinking skills program students will explore De Bono’s Six thinking hats. They will learn powerful techniques that will help them make better decision.

In English and Literacy the children will be continuing with their story writing and reading activities.  We have developed a strong emphasis on teaching grammar and spelling. Throughout this term we will continue to use the Jolly grammar handbook that is both fun and interactive. In oral language we will also be focusing on listening and responding as well as learning how to tell stories and learning simple strategies of descriptive writing.

For Maths this term we will be introducing 3D Geometry as well as ongoing development and practice in both the knowledge and strategy components of the Numeracy Project.

The topics for this term are Physical world: Light and colour (Science, Technology and Language) and Vrindavan and other holy places (Social Studies and Sastra).  An integrated unit has been planned to explore these topics in an interactive and fun way. These integrated units will be explored through inquiry learning where students are able to explore and gather information independently through researching and facilitation.

In the Visual Arts, students will learn techniques and skills of making decorations for the upcoming festivals.

The Health topic for this term will be based on the unit ‘Keeping ourselves safe’, where students will explore different ways of keeping ourselves safe in our surroundings.  Physical education will include Skipping (Jump rope for the heart program) and ball skills.

I hope that the above overview gives you a picture of the term ahead.  If you have any concerns, or queries please feel free to contact me at the school. You can also contact me by e-mail me at subhatra@harekrishna.school.nz
