Looking Into Space

Radio Telescopes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_telescope

Paste an image of what a radio telescope looks like.

How are radio telescopes different from optical telescopes?

Why are optical telescopes put on mountain tops?

Where are radio telescopes put in valleys?

When was the first radio telescope used?

Where is the biggest one?

http://images.google.co.uk/images?svnum=10&um=1&hl=en&q=radio+telescope+images&btnG=Search+Images

Paste some images made by radio telescopes.

The Hubble Telescope.

The Hubble telescope is in orbit around the earth looking out into space. Have a look at the ‘hubblesite’ link and see what you can find in the ‘Hubble essentials’ area.

http://hubblesite.org/

Paste a picture of the Hubble Telescope.

When and how was it launched?

Two organisations developed it; who were they?

Why is a space-based telescope such a good idea?

Does the Hubble collect light or radio waves?

How big is the main mirror?

From where is the telescope controlled?

How does the data get back to earth?

How long will Hubble last?

What will replace it?

Why will this replacement give even better images?

Go into the Hubble Gallery and paste some images from the telescope.

Have a look at some of the film footage in the ‘Hubble Discoveries’ section.

What is the big bang theory anyway?

The big Bang Theory

You are going to produce a power point designed to teach people about the origins of the universe.  Use the revision site below and find some of your own information as well.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/aqa/radiation/originsrev1.shtml

You should explain:

1/ What are the main ideas of the big bang theory?

2/ What is red Shift?

3/ How is red shift evidence for the big bang theory?

4/ What is backround microwave radiation, what does this prove?.

5/ What do you think about the big bang and how does it compare to Vedic science.  Make a venn diagram to compare modern science with the vedic science.

When this is complete then do this:

1) What does SETI stand for? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SETI

2) What was the ‘wow’ signal and why was it thought to be important?

3) Could the ‘wow’ signal have happened by chance?

4) What were humans doing 50,000years ago? Do you think a reply from Arecibo will be of much use? Explain your thinking.

Research websites for Water Rockets

Research and produce a report on water Rockets.

You should include:

How they work.

Design Principles.

A drawing of Your own Design
